How much does it cost to register a trademark in 2026?
The USPTO charges $350 per class to file. What you actually pay depends on how many classes you need, how you describe your goods, and whether you've started selling yet.

Filing a U.S. trademark costs $350 per class in USPTO fees, plus $200 per class if you write your own description and $150 per class later if you file before using the mark. A single-class filing with ID Manual wording pays $350 to the USPTO, plus any service fee, such as Secure Mark USA's from $99.

What changed in USPTO trademark fees in 2025?
On 18 January 2025 the USPTO replaced its two application options, TEAS Plus and TEAS Standard, with a single base application at $350 per class. Instead of a cheaper tier, applicants now pay surcharges only when their application needs extra work. Many articles still quote the old $250 TEAS Plus fee, so check the date on any figure you rely on.
Which USPTO fees might I have to pay?
- Base application: $350 per class, on every application.
- Insufficient information: $100 per class, if required details are missing at filing.
- Free-form description: $200 per class, if you write your own goods or services wording.
- Long description: $200 per class for each extra 1,000 characters.
- Statement of Use: $150 per class, for intent-to-use filings once you start using the mark.
- Extension to file a Statement of Use: $125 per class, for each six-month extension.
- Section 8 declaration: $325 per class, between years 5 and 6 and again with each renewal.
- Section 9 renewal: $325 per class, every 10 years.

What does the filing service fee cover?

How can I lower the cost of a trademark?
- Only file in classes you actually use or plan to use. Each extra class repeats every fee above.
- Pick descriptions from the USPTO ID Manual to avoid the $200 surcharge.
- Search before you file. A refused application doesn't get its filing fee back.
Fee questions we hear most
Does the USPTO refund the fee if my application is refused?
Generally no. The filing fee pays for examination, so it isn't returned when an application is refused or abandoned. That is the main reason to search before you file.
Is the fee charged per trademark or per class?
Per class, per application. One name filed for clothing (Class 25) and an online store (Class 35) is one application with two class fees.
Is there still a cheaper option than $350?
Not for a standard U.S. application. Since 18 January 2025 the $350 base fee is the minimum per class; surcharges only add to it.
What does it cost to keep a registration alive?
A Section 8 declaration is due between years 5 and 6 ($325 per class). At year 10, and every 10 years after, you file Sections 8 and 9 together ($650 per class).
